How was Kanhaiya Lal killed? Why was the Udaipur tailor murdered?
Kanhaiya Lal had written some allegedly objectionable remarks over the Nupur Sharma row on social media. He was arrested and later released. The news agency PTI reported that after his release, he was getting threats over the phone. He had informed the police about them as well. The police had also arranged a meeting between him and the aggrieved parties and the matter appeared to be resolved. However, on Tuesday, he was murdered.
According to reports, the two alleged assailants entered Kanhaiyalal's shop disguised as customers who wanted their clothes stitched. The unsuspecting tailor fell prey to their deception and started taking the measurements of Akhtari. The video of the crime shows Akhtari holding the cleaver as Kanhaiya Lal took his measurement. Mohammad, meanwhile, was recording the act on his camera. He then attacked the tailor and nearly beheaded him. He died on the spot.
The duo later posted several videos on social media connected with the crime. They said they committed the crime to avenge an insult to Islam. They also threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi. They also made indirect reference to Nupur Sharma, who had allegedly made objectionable remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Source DNA

Riyaz Akhtari and Ghosh Mohammad — were planning to go to Ajmer Sharif Dargah, but were arrested in Bhim, Rajsamand, intelligence sources told CNN-News18.

Mohammad had joined Pakistan-based extremist religious group Dawat-e-Islami through Riyasat Hussain and Abdul Razak of Udaipur and had visited Karachi in Pakistan by the end of 2013, along with 30 others from India, he was accompanied by two others from Udaipur — Wasim Akthari and Akthar Raza — and returned on February 1, 2014, after 45 days.

Mohammad also visited Saudi Arabia twice in 2013 and 2019 and Nepal in 2017-18, Mohammad revealed that Dawat -e-Islami is also connected with Pakistan’s extremist political party Tehriq-e-Labbaik.

He was also in constant touch with Salman Bhai and Abbu Ibrahim in Karachi, both of whom are associated with Dawat-e-Islami.

‘SHOW STRONG REACTION’

After former Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Nupur Sharma’s remarks against the Prophet, Salman Bhai and Abbu Ibrahim told Mohammad that they had protested in Pakistan and that he, too, should show “a strong reaction” in India.

On June 20, Akhtari and Mohammad had a meeting at Anjuman, Mukherjee chowk in Udaipur with Mujib Siddique (Anjuman Sadar), Julkan Sadar (Maulana), Ashwaq (lawyer) and Manud (lawyer), where the duo volunteered to kill the tailor. Riyaz surveyed the tailor's shop four-five times.

Hundreds of angry protesters hit the streets of Udaipur in Rajasthan demanding a death sentence for the killers of tailor Kanhaiyya Lal Teli, who was hacked to death in his shop with sharp weapons allegedly over a social media post in support of the suspended Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spokesperson Nupur Sharma, the Dhanmondi police had registered a first information report against Kanhaiyaa Lal on June 11. He was arrested and released on bail the next day. His family members and friends said that some child had posted the message.
The tailor got a CCTV installed at his shop located in the busy Maldas Street market. Thinking that the issue had been resolved, he opened his shop on Tuesday. After a while, two persons turned up posing as customers. Just when he was taking the measurements for one of them, he was attacked with sharp weapons around 2. 45 p.m. The whole act was video graphed by the assailants. One of the helpers of Kanhaiyya Lal also sustained severe head injuries while trying to save him.

The two prime accused, Mohammed Riyaz Attari and Ghous Mohammed were arrested by the police hours after the brutal killing of tailor Kanhaiyya Lal Teli on Wednesday. As initial investigations pointed to a Pakistan link, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) took over the case in which provisions of the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act have been invoked.
"The accused persons had also circulated a video of the criminal act in the social media claiming responsibility for the murder in order to trigger panic and strike terror among the masses across the country," the NIA said.
Reports said Akhtari works at a local mosque and the other assailant runs a grocery shop

After subduing him, the two accused dragged the victim out of the shop and slit his throat. The other shopkeepers in the area were so terrorised by the incident that no one dared to rescue him. The assailants fled the scene of the crime on foot and then drove away on a motorcycle. As the news of the killing spread, it triggered an instant protest by the members of several Hindu organisations. They did not allow the police to remove the body, demanding the arrest of those involved.
Within an hour of the killing, a video surfaced in which the accused claimed responsibility for the grisly murder and also threatened Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Around 8 p.m., the police announced that the two had been arrested near Rajsamand, around 80 km from Udaipur. Thereafter, the police were allowed to take away the body.

Lal’s funeral procession started from his house in sector 14 amid tight security arrangements in the presence of hundreds of locals. The incident triggered stray cases of violence in Udaipur and a curfew has been clamped in seven police station areas of the city. A day after the murder, heavy deployment of police has been made in the city.

Religious murder in the past

Kisan Bharwad was murdered by Muslims

On January 6, Kishan posted a video on social media in which the Hindu deity Krishna was depicted as 'Superior' to Islamic Prophet Muhammad and Jesus. Shortly after this social media post, there was outrage by some members of the Muslim community and an FIR was filed against him under the incitement/blasphemy Law 8 days before the murder. He was made to apologize, after which he was released by the police
At 5:30 on 25 January, as Kishan had moved outside his house for the first time since his release from police custody, he was shot by 2 bike-borne assailants later identified as Shabbir and Imtiaz by Gujarat Police. Kishan died on the spot. Later, when the police tried to return the body to the family, it refused to receive it and only accepted the body and funeral proposals after meeting Hindu Organization leaders in the area. Leaders from Antarashtriya Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal organized Bandh as a form of protest saying that the Hindu Youth was Martyred.

Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS): Renewing Efforts in India

To date, Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent’s (AQIS) attempts to entice Muslims has been met with (mainly) stony silence and inaction. Simultaneously, the Indian government’s efficiency and the cooperation of the Indian Muslim community have prevented the jihadist phenomenon, and AQIS in particular, from amplifying — either in the form of attacks conducted or citizens travelling overseas to join the group’s international factions.

A rise in jihadist participation, however, is symptomatic of the broader socio-political conditions in the country in which it takes root. In this regard, the fear of rising Hindu nationalism could spark a violent pushback from disenfranchised Muslims. Thus, the role of the Indian government in reigning in extreme elements needs to be extended to Hindu hardliners as well as Muslim extremists to thwart Al-Qaeda’s long-term ambitions in the country.
